What to Expect on the Caminito del Rey

A first-timer's guide to walking the Caminito del Rey — the boardwalks, the hanging bridge, the height, how long it takes, the rules, and how scary it really is.

Updated June 2026

The Caminito del Rey’s reputation is scarier than the walk. Since the 2015 restoration it’s a wide, railed boardwalk — but it’s still a long, high, one-way route through a dramatic gorge. Here’s what the day is actually like.

The route, start to finish

It’s a one-way walk of about 7.7 km total: access trails and forest paths at each end, plus roughly 2.9 km of boardwalks (the pasarelas) bolted to the cliff. You begin at the northern (Ardales/reservoir) end and finish at the southern (El Chorro) end. Plan for 3 to 4 hours at an easy pace. It’s mostly flat or gently descending — the effort is the distance and the exposure, not steep climbing.

The boardwalks, the bridge, and the height

The signature stretch pins you to the rock wall up to about 100 metres above the river. The boards are solid and railed; there’s a short glass-floored viewing section and a hanging footbridge across the gorge that are the highlights (and the photos). If you’re comfortable on, say, a tall observation deck, you’ll be fine. If you have severe vertigo, this is an honest “maybe not.”

The rules

  • Minimum age 8. Children must be with an adult.
  • Hard hat required — provided at the entrance, worn the whole way (rockfall protection).
  • Closed-toe walking shoes only. No sandals or heels.
  • No large bags; a small daypack is fine.
  • Not wheelchair accessible, and not advised for serious heart conditions.

What to bring

Water and sun protection are the big ones — much of the route is exposed, and there’s no shop on the walkway. Add a light layer (the gorge can be breezy), and secure your phone or camera; it’s a long drop. Bring your booking confirmation and ID for your timed entry.

How scary is it, really?

Honestly: thrilling, not terrifying. The drops are real and the views are vertiginous, but the path is wide, modern, and railed, and thousands walk it safely every day — the from-Málaga tour alone has a 4.9/5 rating from over 17,000 people. Go at your own pace, hold the rail on the high sections, and enjoy one of Andalusia’s great walks.
